Times-Picayune opinion: Better data will build a better city

By Brian Denzer

A NolaStat opinion piece published in The Times-Picayune calls on incoming Mayor Mitch Landrieu to commit to an open government policy on his first day in office.

The city needs to get out of the business of attempting to build flashy applications, and instead focus on making good, timely, reliable data easily available online. Once that happens, innovators in the private sector will find ways to package that data for convenient use by citizens and businesses.

Many thanks to The Times-Picayune and its highly-talented letters editor, Annette Sisco, who is remarkably responsive, and extraordinarily talented at chiseling copy into finely-faceted gems.

An unabridged version of the opinion piece contains some ideas that didn’t fit into the print version.

The few examples that exist of true cooperation and data-sharing between public officials and neighborhood associations convincingly demonstrate that when citizens and government work together, the sum is greater than its parts.

Would you like to help improve quality of life in New Orleans by supporting neighborhood revitalization and the delivery of city services?

Learn more about the NolaStat recommendations, download the tri-fold brochure, and ask Mitch to implement the two key recommendations: 1) Improve public access to city data; and 2) Institute a performance management policy to improve city operations.
