Election map: Susan Guidry defeats Jay Batt in District A runoff

By Brian Denzer

dista_100306Attorney and neighborhood organizer Susan Guidry soundly defeated Jay Batt in the March 6th runoff for the District A City Council seat. Guidry earned roughly 3200 more votes than her opponent, ending Batt’s attempt to regain the seat after he was defeated by Shelley Midura in 2006.

The election result was consistent with predictions made after the primary election (map). The majority of voters in the February 6th primary voted for candidates other than Batt. In the runoff, Guidry actually gained on Batt in a few Lakeview precincts.

Turnout was extremely low, with about half the number of primary voters turning out for the runoff.

Guidry has been a strong proponent of the open government, performance management ideas recommended in the NolaStat policy reform. Her election to the Council, combined with the election of other candidates receptive to government reform, adds to the reasons why New Orleanians should feel highly optimistic about the future of the city.
